Afterlee Ecovillage: Building a Resilient, Community-Owned Village in Kyogle Shire
After three years of planning, the Afterlee Ecovillage has received approval from Kyogle Council, bringing an exciting development to the community of Kyogle Shire.
Afterlee Ecovillage is a unique land-sharing initiative encompassing 65 homesites, including the historic Afterlee Primary School and local Rural Fire Service facilities. Once the site of the former Afterlee Township, spread across a 700-acre site, the ecovillage will blend community life with nature and regenerative farming, and aims to restore elements of the former township.
The Afterlee Ecovillage represents a novel approach to multiple-occupancy development. The land is owned collectively by shareholders of the Healthy Living Community Co-operative (HLCC), who are shaping the village’s design, features, and development, supported by expert guidance. This includes the project founder, ecovillage planner and educator Shane Sylvanspring of Planning Regenerative Communities.
Thirty-one shares were sold in round one, and round two has just opened with 30 additional shares now available, making affordable housing options accessible to new members. The co-operative offers affordable smaller homesites near its central hub, the ‘village centre’, as well as larger acre options, and we are focused on aesthetics and holistic building practices that can bring our community in closer harmony with nature and the land.
With approval secured, Afterlee Ecovillage will begin developing essential community infrastructure, a community hall, work sheds, and recreational facilities, with current discussions around a pool, a plant nursery, orchards, walking trails, a café, and the revitalized school.
