Ecovillages in New South Wales

Ecovillages in New South Wales

New South Wales has become one of the most active regions in Australia for ecovillage and intentional community projects. Interest in cooperative land stewardship, regenerative agriculture, and community living has steadily grown across the state over the past two decades.

Ecovillages in NSW often combine private homes with shared land, community governance structures, and ecological design principles. Many of these communities aim to create neighbourhoods where people know their neighbours, children grow up connected to nature, and land is cared for collectively.

One of the best known projects is Narara Ecovillage, located on the Central Coast north of Sydney. Developed on the site of a former government research station, Narara has become an active intentional community focused on ecological housing, collaborative decision-making, and regenerative land management.

The best way to understand an ecovillage is to visit the land and meet the people involved.

Afterlee Ecovillage hosts guided site tours on the second Saturday of each month. These tours provide an opportunity to walk the land, learn about the project, and ask questions about how the community is developing.

After the morning tour, visitors are welcome to stay and meet members of the cooperative during the monthly working bee, where people come together to care for the land and continue shaping the project.

This gives prospective members the chance to experience both the landscape and the community that is gradually bringing the ecovillage to life.
